This will be my first 10mm venture into this period: what rules do you guys who know what you are doing (and those who only think they do) use and/or recommend?

Many thanks from a wargaming Old Lag

All are popular, all work well and all have faults. It's a matter of scale/players/etc...

Don't listen to him, he's mad. Field of Battle 2nd Edition (FOB2).
Don't buy your daughters a pony, buy them heroin instead, its cheaper and ultimately less addictive.

Do you have an idea of the kind of game you want to do? What rules for other periods do you like & would want something similar?

For example our group use a set called Twilight of the Sun King for large battles - 1 or 2 players a side doing full historical major battles. For smaller actions of a few brigades per player we use a version of an ECW set, which is a lot more tactical than Twilight. We generally play historical battles so don't use some rules because of this.

I would heartily recommend Baroque - its tasty and fresh.

I wouldn't wish FOG anything on my worst enemies  :P

Whereas I cannot stand the impetus stable of games!  :P Different strokes...  ;D

I believe Impetuous Fogroque is a good compromise.

We are going to use Sam Mustafa's Maurice for our upcoming club campaign. It is a bit generic and vague when it comes to LoA minutiae, but we like the card-driven system. The light version of the rules is free to download on the Honour site. The full rules have sections on pike armed infantry and late 17th C artillery.

Oh my god - I hate them. After numerous games with different opponents I still had not witnessed the attacker win a Maurice battle.

Hmm... That would explain my poor performance. We have not played enough to discover this yet... Although the rules seem to hint at this flaw by giving the players the option to add even more mercenary units to the attacking force.
Anyway we'll give them a go.

Maurice is OK but really rather flavourless, it gets old fast basically. Shame really because it has some nice elements, just not enough to breathe life into a game. That said I know people who have been playing little else for the last 4 years.

Baroque on the other hand appears to be able to inject flavour and differences into armies that are essentially identical. And create a cracking game of decision and indecision.

The downside being that there aren't really any LOA period lists published yet - that's the problem with new rules.

Looks like I'll have to pick up a copy of Baroque at salute then  :)

Again, many thanks one and all - one the one hand...but on the other hand...!!!   I started many years ago with 25mm Minifigs (yes, those pikemen with telegraph poles) using Battleaxe Rules: anyone else remember them?   I will give some serious though to buying a copy of Baroque which sound to be, if not total favourites, at least to have least objections.   I like my games to be far away from DBM style and to have at least some flavour of historical reality.
