Does anyone else have a problem with the flags cast as part of the standard bearer? My painting abilities are limited to making a good job of painting the figures. I would have no chance of painting a 28mm scale flag let alone one in 10mm scale. What are the chances of havong standarxd bearers with the flagpole only, as for the 1870 Prussians?

Yes, I really struggle to paint metal flags and there are lots of sources out there to either buy or download flags which can be printed and stuck on brass flag poles.

Couldn't agree more. I strongly dislike cast flags.

Yep. Cast flags suck. Just give us the bare pole or, even better, open hands

We've asked all our designers to make empty poles on all figures in the future.  I think most areas where they do appear have got bare pole versions available as well(SYW, FPW).

I missed this thread before but I've recently bought some SYW figures, some of which have cast flags and some 'bare' pikes. In order to bring them all into line I've just ordered some of the generic standard bearers.

I could never paint cast flags and much prefer to add my own computer printed ones. I therefore welcome the move away from cast flags. However, the bare poles are very vulnerable, especially with an added flag. I always cut them off, drill holes and replace with pins. More work now but less upset later.

If the flag policy is ever reconsidered, I'd like to express a vote for open-handed figures.

I do enjoy painting the FPW French cast flag, otherwise I go for printed flags.
