OK, so as I work on my Empire army for Warmaster, I've encountered a problem.  I wasn't nearly as happy with my sample pack of halberdiers from the Landsknecht line as with my Gendarmes from the Late Medieval line.  So I'm thinking that one of the pike codes would make a good proxy for halberdiers instead. Here are the codes I'm looking at:

ELM9 (Late Medieval) - Looks a little more primitive than I'd like, but workable.  The chainmail is particularly out of line with the mental image I've got

ER9 (Flodden Range Scots Pike) - I really, really, like the looks of these.  Not 100% sold on the heaviness of the armor for State troops, but they're pretty!

EL4 (Elizabethan) - They're pretty nice, if I chose these I'd regret not doing ER9, and choosing ER9 I'd regret not doing these guys.  Also, I'm worried about finding appropriate crossbow troops to go with them.

Alternatively, I throw the whole pike thing out the window and go for EL 6, the targeteers would make for a nice Hochland themed force, but this really isn't my first choice.

In your experience, which of these codes paints up the best?  Which would you choose to use?

My guess is that, as far as painting is concerned, they would all be fairly similar, '3'.
Mix and match, perhaps ?  :-\

I went for a mix, also adding in some of LAN1

If you're after halberdiers why not try the actual chaps with halberds from the Fantasy or ELM range -

http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FME4-p4982/ & http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FME6-p4984/

They should be spot on - nice little figures! Much more so than the Landsknectes who are a bit static. Although I tend to use the landsknecte pike as back ranks for everyone as they're all in "pike upright" pose!

I've mentioned this in your intro thread 3Acres but I'll repeat, have a look at the Jedbugh Stavemen in the Flodden range

These are the two types in the Elizabethan pack. When I get more I think I will ask Leon for a pack of all the same type

I'm not sure which code my Morion wearing chaps are from then. They came with standing and marching poses.

Drat, wish I'd slipped a pack of those into my chaps to break up the back ranks a bit!

Wow, that mix of packs turned out absolutely lovely!  I think I'm sold on a mix and match of pike packs for most units with one unit of EL6 as a "Guards" unit.

@Ithoriel: I'd looked at those and been sorely tempted, they are quite nice looking.  There's just this little voice in my head saying "do pikes.... pikkkeeess".  That being said, I could totally see trying a pack of those to represent a unit with different upgrades however. You can really never have just enough pointy sticks.

I'd like to thank all of you for your input, it was right on point.

No such thing as "chainmail".
I don't drink coffee to wake up. I wake up to drink coffee.

Chainmail - armor made from metal rings that are joined together in a pattern to form a protective mesh.

As opposed to ring-mail, plate-mail, banded-mail, etc.

Reall FK, we've been through this before ... do keep up ;)

OK, I was worried about going in the loony bin for a second there.  I was 100% sure you could send all the manacles and shackles you wanted through the parcel service....

We're not talking about the same sort of chainmail anymore, are we?

Haven't we had this argument before over chainmail. FK isn't English so he's never going to be happy with our idiom, i.e armour if its that stuff that stands up on its own and chainmail if it flops to the ground.
