So this morning I decided to slap some paint on some 10mm figures for the first time.

Not a particularly good photograph but it is just the start. As these are AVBCW forces, I'm currently favoring Russian Uniform for one force and either English Uniform or German Camo Medium Brown for the other.

Next step is to pick out some details and do the flesh.

Now with some details picked out and a splash of Coat d'arms Light Brown Super Wash.

Quite liking the result. Think en mass they will be different enough to tell apart.

EDIT: Pics resized.

Greenish green and brown ish green, looks like they should be good!

Can you get a less "super enlarged" comparison photo with them at "gaming distance/scale"? Might be easier to judge :D

And there's me just remembered I had a macro lens for my phone! Will sort out a more regular photo in a bit.

Okay, slightly more distance photo:

One change I'm going to make going forward is to use US Field Drab instead of brown for equipment and boots. Tried it on one of the other figures and it looks more subtle.

Sorry :D

I find it's often more useful to see the figures "as is", as otherwise when they're blown up to huge size everything gets a bit unreal ;)

Although with my usual photo skills I shouldn't comment!

Definitely looks just subtly different enough to be a different faction/unit, good stuff :)

Thank you. Other option is to go for a grey based colour, possibly either Uniform Grey or Khaki Grey. Going to paint up a couple of figure and see how they look.

For this period a mix of colours works nicely for irregular forces. For regular troops I go for a uniform look and colour.

I'm veering towards the Russian Uniform Green for the Army of The Severn Valley, especially as those troops will predominantly be made up of WWI and early WWII infantry figures, with a small contingent of BUF thrown in.

One last photo for today:

From left to right: Olive Drab, Khaki Grey and Uniform Grey

Quite like the Khaki Grey. Whilst it might not be historically accurate, it is a strong contrast to the green of the Russian Uniform. Would mean using a brown for equipment as the US Field Drab doesn't stand out as much, but that's fine.

Tomorrow I'm off to the local railway specialists for some flock. Then I can paint up a base of each and see what they look liked based.

I like the uniform grey for Fascist inspired militia, maybe? It's got that kind of "not quite totally German" look and is much more interesting than black :)

Other two stand out quite nicely there from each other, too.

Having posted that picture, that was exactly the thought I had.

So now I have:

BUF: Uniform Grey with probably a suitable colour for the side caps. Obvious choice is red, but maybe blue.
Royalists: Russian Uniform
Anglicans: Predominantly Khaki Grey, with some green and brown for the civilian clothing.

Almost got the figure list down too. Not bad for a days effort.

And thanks everyone for the input, it is very much appreciated.
