As well as the walled city made from Pendraken bases I now have a small naval force.

I usually start a project like this by painting one of each unit to get an idea on colours to use and what to paint in which order. I still need to paint a Command Stand, a Professional Spear unit and a Tribal unit to have one of each of the planned units.

The naval component is just 7 models - a flagship, three "standard" warships and three reed-built transports.

The flagship is a Grumpy's Miniatures' Cossack Chaika with the bow gunners converted to conscript spearmen/ marines and the GW Man O' War mast has a crow's nest manned by a Rapier Miniatures slinger.

The "standard" warships are Grumpy's Miniatures war canoes, again with GW masts and spars. At least they are paddling, as they should be, not rowing like the flagship crew.

Museum Miniatures 15mm reed canoes were given GW mast and spars and a Rapier miniatures javelinman steering the ship with a dressmakers pin steering oar.

The warships have crews of the right size to match my 16-figure skirmish unit, assuming a couple of crew need to remain with the ship, so I plan to have an option for crew to disembark and fight as infantry, if required.

Buy plenty of Matron's sculpts now!

If he keeps using the chainsaw, the value of his work will soon go up.

I'll have six, please. :)

Some pictures of the army units. General and bodyguard, professional spearmen and tribesmen (at least) still to come.

First up, the Gish Gigir or Donkey Carts :)

Then the Erin Summa or conscript spearmen - the backbone of any Sumerian army.

Then what I'm calling the Erin Pana. Erin are conscripts either military or civilian and Pana is a bow. No idea what the Sumerians actually called such troops.

Finally the Nim (it means Flies) - here armed with javelins, slings and bows though some of the originals had throw-sticks - similar to an Australian aboriginal war boomerang.
