Hang on chaps! This could be a trap!

This is the Darker Lord, whose guile is legendary and whose capriciousness had been the stuff of tales best spoken in hushed tones when the night is dark, and the moon is hidden. This being of another dimension cannot be trusted. He will take our words and twist them for his own cynical amusement. The Dark Lord begs him daily to release the full set of Aztecs, and yet with a careless laugh he tosses the masters back into his ebon chest - adorned with the screaming skulls of those who displeased him. Even the tears of Milday cannot move the rock that is his heart.

We, the flies under the Pendraken horse's tail, must best the Darker Lord with even more cunning that a bag of foxes. We must outwit his monstrous intelligence, and best him in the mind games in which he excels. Above all, he must not be aware of our plans. We must communicate in secret ways, using only trusted comrades. Make sure you speak out the side of your mouth, and try not to move your lips as you type.

I have a suggestion. One of us should present the Darker Lord with a choice that seems to come from us all. He will see this and his great chuckle muscle will bob up and down, such will be his mirth. He will take great delight in doing the opposite of what we want.

I humbly volunteer to be the one to face he whose word can split continents. I shall place myself in his sight, and if this should mean my utter destruction (or expulsion from the forum), then so be it. I have found great friends in this forum and I ask only that you remember me. Perhaps a "Nobby Day" on my birthday, when everyone is rude about Techno. I'd like that. And if you could pass all the derision that I receive to Westmarcher, then that would make me happy.

Here goes.

Ummmm......
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

Mako's suggestions
(a) to permit 1960s to 80s and sometimes beyond

BRDM-2 - agreed
BRDM w/ATGMs - agreed (Sagger esp for Mid East, Swatter/Spandrel)
BMP-1 - priority as use for Mid East - not sure at this scale what changes one would make for the -1P with AT-4
BTR-60PB - agreed
T-62 - agreed priority for Mid East as well: not sure which model would be best
T-64 - question whether this, the T-72 or T-80 is a better bet, though the latter in particular is relevant to the end of the period Mako refers to.
[Soviet] troops - absolutely: to do this right would need riflemen, RPD/RPK LMG, RPG-7 or 16 etc, SA-7 or similar, SVD sniper rifle, officer, radio operator, probably PK MG, possibly AGL.

BMP-2 in mid 80s often mixed wit BMP-1 in formations (in separate companies).  Definitely a secondary priorty I would think.

I'd assume that ZSU-23(4) and SP artillery more likely to be off-board.

I have fewer views on NATO kit.

T64 is not well understood. Its existence was even doubted until spies photographed it in East Germany. It was the more sophisticated stable mate of the T72. It was never offered for export, only the cheap basic T72. It equipped the best Soviet formations and would have been a surprise if the cold war went hot in the late 70's. The Warsaw Pact allies got T55s and T72s.

Additions to the Brits not mentioned that would be needed; FV432 mortar vehicle, Sultan command vehicle. If a Chieftain is made, please make sure you do some Romor armour with it as an option for the 80's stillbrew upgrade.

The Germans with their early Leopard 2s and the US with early 105mm Abrams were available in the late 70s.

A propos. I stayed with a Danish family for 2 weeks in 1969. One of the sons was doing his national service with tank battalion/regiment. Loved the Centurion but was really excited about the fact they were to be equipped with Leopards.
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

Not only was the T64 much more sophisticated than the T72 it was also much more expensive to build, which is why relatively few were constructed. They were issued to the divisions in East Germany and remained on their strength until the divisions were disbanded in 1989.

Well, Centurion, Chaffee, AMX-13...  So Leopard 1 (and Leopard 2) would make good additions if you want to build a Dutch cold war force. You can also use the M113, and the Argentinians would make good infantry, I think?

On the other hand, those Soviet tanks and APC's would be more useful. And the infantry even more so.
