I finally got the chance to read my copy of Jenny Dolfen's "Darkness Over Cannae". It was pretty good. Mostly focused on the battle and with her great illustrations, it was a crisp fun read. Did a good job of conveying some ideas of the difficulties of command, and the exhaustion of battle. Well worth a read. It would be a great present for a teenager of any gender who might get interested in history thanks to it. It would be cool if she did a whole series.

My aunt gave me 'Hannibal and the Enemies of Rome' for Christmas when i was about 12. Loved it. That was the book that got me to buy my first historical figures and wargames rules. Before that only fantasy. Peter Connolly can stretch the facts a bit to fit his own theories on things (e.g not really any evidence that Liby-Phoenicians in Hannibal's army were pikemen, nor that Carthaginian cavalry wore horse armour), but a lot of the other stuff he covers is just fascinating - and so well illustrated with graphics and artwork. And with a narrative history running alongside it all on each page.

Yup, the Collony book is great. I had to give it up due to my move :(
