What is my POP 3 server ?.....and why does it keep telling me it hasn't responded for 60 seconds.....and would I like to wait.....(Outlook Express)
Don't have much option, I suppose.

Does my server (Orange) hate me......or is there something up (AGAIN) with the steam powered bit of junk that masquerades as my computer.
I SO want to put my fist through the monitor. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Cheers - Mr Grumpy....(I'm switching the blanking thing off now.....I can't take any more tonight.)

Sounds like either too much or too little orange pop

I'm not completely 100% (as I avoid Outlook where possible), but I think your POP3 server is the people who actually host your email, so whoever is at the end of your Techno@... email address.  For us, that would be btinternet, but we use their own webmail service so there's no issues.  If we were using Outlook, then the issue would be at BT's end, and their server not connecting with Outlook to get the emails.  I'd assume it can also be a connection issue, where your computer isn't able to get hold of the emails for Outlook to display?

I'll await someone more 'techy' to come along to either confirm (unlikely) or smash apart my limited knowledge...

As an aside though, at some point we might need to re-brand you as Tech-not...  :P

Dear Mr Grumpy,

•Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) servers hold incoming e‑mail messages until you check your e‑mail, at which point they're transferred to your computer. POP3 is the most common account type for personal e‑mail. Messages are typically deleted from the server when you check your e‑mail.

It wants you to wait, as its either busy or of not working properly., and no you dont have an option

"Orange" just hates everybody, they are not picking on you especially, Well I dont THINK they are  :d.

I would advise against putting your fist through the monitor , You will however probably feel better in yourself having done his but:-

1 It will render the monitor inopperative for other uses
2 You will have to part with your hard earned cash to buy another monitor
3 Mrs T will not be happy as said money could be spent on her or her equine freinds
4 You will severely hurt your hand and be unable to work and earn money - (Mrs T will will probably have something to say about that )
5 You may damage your hands permanently causing Cries of anguish from members of the Forum as various Pendraken and Private projects get shelved.

Thanks Gents.
What I find SO frustrating is that simple one line replies, of just plain text can take up to 10 minutes to come through !
(While i sit waiting for the POP 3 'announcement' to ask.....Do you want to wait ?.....Do you want to wait ?)

I think I've had just the one mail in the past few months that's actually come through 'with a whoosh'.
"Receiving mail.....Sodding Heck.....It's here already !".....(One of yours, Leon)...I nearly fainted.

I'll have a whinge at Orange.

I know this poor old PC desperately needs replacing.......Hopefully in the next few months.
Is this POP 3 server also responsible for occasionally slowing down sites......Or is that likely to be the fact that other bits of gubbins are running in the background ?
(If I remember correctly, you good folk advised that the old processor on this PC is now being overwhelmed by 'modern stuff''...and probably Norton ;))

Half of this reply......I've had to sit and wait a few seconds for each individual letter to come up on the screen, while the PC thinks about it....The rest of the time I can type as fast as I like without a problem.

Cheers - Mr Not Quite So Grumpy.......Yet .

I've had similar problems in the past with Outlook. I've headed over to the Microsoft site and looked at the trouble-shooting pages.

Would shifting over to another e-mail provider help? I've used G-Mail for a couple of years now with no problems at all (famous last words!). It doesn't use Outlook and it's free.  :-bd

Techno,

is the PC connecting wirelessly? Or is it connected to the router ... hub .... Orange "gubbins" ... by wire?

Wireless connection can be slower, so if it's the former, try the latter.

After weeks of wireless connection at 0.2Mb/s I persuaded my father to connect up with a Cat5 Ethernet cable I had kicking around and his connection speed went up to over 2Mb/s ... a ten-fold increase!

Not a guaranteed speed up, nothing certain in this world but death and taxes and all that, but worth a try if it applies.

EMail client shouldn't affect it, GMail isn't intrinsically any faster than Outlook.

New PC sounds like a good idea too!

Nothing is free on thd interweb.  If you aren't paying for a service you're the pproduct being sold.

Especially with Google.  They'll be gathering your email data for commercial gain.

Something that I should really investigate, Dickie.....Good thought.

The orange email site seems to work fine, Ray......If I look there....The mails are there already.......It seems to be slow getting THAT site to send them thro' to Outlook....I just prefer Outlook for storing relevant mails, so I can have a quick gander at old stuff.

New PC sounds like a good idea too!

It's hard-wired, 'I'......Maybe it gets slow when the string goes slack instead of being nice and tight !  ;D ;)
But yes.....I think a lot of the frustration will go with a new PC......When Mrs T's works pension kicks in.  ;)
Ironically, the temperamental thing is behaving VERY well......Just at the moment.

Thanks again, all.
